I liked this album when it came out, but coming back to it to compare it to Raditude I found myself liking a few tracks and really not liking the rest at all. Make Believe>Raditute>Red, if I am ranking the last three.

This album was just not Weezer. Sure the first 3 tracks are great, and Dreamin' and The Angel & The One were great as well. The rest though, while not being terrible songs, were just not "Weezer". [2]

just because they were 'happy' when they wrote this album doesn't give them an excuse to write such utterly retarded lyrics. I love Pinkerton, and even so I'll admit the lyrics were sometimes clumsy, but the hooks, solos and vocals were always rock solid. Weezer were just being complacent on this album. The video to Pork and Beans pretty much exemplified what the target market for the album was: basement-dwelling internet nerds who would 'get' all the 'hilarious' youtube sensation references, and teenyboppers looking for the latest flavor of the month they could dispose of at the end of the summer. I'm not going to get into the argument of 'selling out' because I'm fine with that as long as the band in question still releases a good, catchy record. The Red Album does not fall into that category. Cuomo could get away with his awkward geek shtick back in 1994-96, but it's pretty pathetic now. 'Ironic' covers of Lady Gaga just emphasize that.

This album features both the best and worst material Weezer has released since Pinkerton. "TGMTEL" is a charming, infectious and over-the-top run through of Weezer's various sounds, the production on the chorus of "Pork & Beans" sounds like classic Blue Album era Weezer, and (if you got the deluxe edition), "Miss Sweeney" is their first new song to sound like a Pinkerton outtake. But then they included songs like "Everybody Get Dangerous," which is, in my opinion, the worst Weezer song EVER (even worse than "Possibilities"). And "Heartsongs," which actually has potential with different lyrics and, most importantly, less corny production. Oh, and let's not forget "The Angel and The One," which tries for "Only In Dreams" but ends up with Creed. Totally bipolar album, but for what it's worth I'm thankful for "Miss Sweeney."

tricubus, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. It may still be Weezer at it's core, but you cannot tell me a song like Everybody Get Dangerous, The Greatest Man That Ever Lived, or Troublemaker have the same emotional value as songs like Across The Sea, Say It Ain't So, or hell, even Perfect Situation. They may be fun, sure, but they are shallow pop songs, similar to The Green Album (which is imo tied with this album for Weezer's worst). And it's not even just the lyrics... the songs on this album are just dull. Look at The Angel and The One, that could be a great song, but it ends up just being boring and repetetive, and lacking a killer chorus. As much as Weezer fans want to pretend, that song does not capture the magic of Only In Dreams, Butterfly, or shit, even Haunt You Every Day. And another thing... no solos on this album? That is just heartbreaking. Solos, no matter how simple they may be, have been a staple of Weezer's sound since the beginning and should always be.

This is an awesome album. Pretty much everything's good, but Troublemaker, Greatest Man, Dreamin', and Angel and the one are masterpieces.
