Weekend Revolutionaries is the Euro house project of an anonymous solo artist/producer from Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia. The musical influences of the project include Aphex Twin, Delorean, M83, Lone, Washed Out and Cut Copy. Weekend Revolutionaries is currently signed to Amdiscs, a Prague/London based independent record label, through which 4th studio album Movement was released on August 25, 2011.

The first Weekend Revolutionaries recordings were made in February 2006, with the project taking on the actual Weekend Revolutionaries name in April 2008. Weekend Revolutionaries has declined to play live concerts on a number of occasions, preferring instead to be an entirely studio-based project.

The first official record, Coastal Mentality, was released in December 2009. It was then reissued in 2010 in remastered form, and also saw an extremely limited physical release through Big Cartel. The following day after the reissue was announced, the release information for the album’s two singles, ‘Haze‘ and ‘Lucid Experience‘, was revealed. ‘Lucid Experience’ ultimately rose to number 21 on the Triple J Unearthed charts in 2009.

Coastal Mentality was the first of Weekend Revolutionaries’ official records, and the first part of a trilogy of instrumental concept albums. Each record had an accompanying ideology or philosophical direction which it sought to convey through instrumentation only. The idea behind Coastal Mentality was to explore the relationship between human emotion and atmospheric weather conditions, and allude to the perception of a relaxed lifestyle experienced by people gravitating towards coastal locations.

This was followed by the second part in the trilogy, the 16 track, 80 minute opus, Post-Seachange, which contained the singles ‘Last Journey’ and ‘Different Island’, in July 2010. The album expanded on the styles of the debut and represented a significant development in terms of both sound and arrangement. The idea behind the record was to explore what happens after people follow through on the idyllic notions of seaside life, and track titles such as ‘Tunnels’, ‘Overpass’ and ‘Urban Sprawl’ hint at the increasing prevalence of metropolitan infrastructure and the physical human impact on previously untouched coastal landscapes.

Continuing a productive 2010 (a year which saw 2 albums and an EP released), the dark, UK bass and jungle-influenced concept album Surveillance was released in October. The record explored sounds and styles previously unheard in the Weekend Revolutionaries discography, and was made up of a short, ominous introduction and 5 sprawling, 10-minute plus epic suites that told a story of isolation and escapism without the use of lyrics, portraying events in the nameless, faceless protagonist’s journey through vivid soundscapes and ‘musique concrète’ elements. The record’s ideas followed on from those of Post-Seachange, and completed the trilogy of concept albums by evoking apocalyptic tension and paranoia, and envisaging a 1984-esque future dystopia where every waking moment is carefully monitored in great detail by governments and secretive organisations. The trilogy’s catharsis occurs during Surveillance‘s closer, ‘Surface’, where the protagonist escapes the trappings of modern life and frees themselves from the claustrophobic world around them.

December 2010 saw the release of the 5 track EP Summer Forever, which returned a similar sound to that of Post-Seachange. The EP was well received by the public, outselling any of the previous full length albums. Punctuated by the anthemic ‘Midnight Walk’, Summer Forever was based around the story of a solitary woodland expedition to an isolated lodge, in order to escape a hyper-futuristic bleak, urban megalopolis where the sun could no longer be seen through the concrete mass of high-rise buildings and endless sheet of industrial smog. The title track from the EP was reviewed favourably by Triple J’s Richard Kingsmill.

No new music was released under the banner of the project between December 2010 and July 2011, as Weekend Revolutionaries worked on the 4th LP Movement. Movement was released on July 4, 2011 through Bandcamp, and August 25, 2011 through Prague/London-based dance label Amdiscs, and exhibited dense, vibrant production and elements of Balearic beat, ‘Madchester’ rave music, French house, Italo disco and chillwave. Influenced by the vitality and volatility of the 1980s Manchester rave scene, the paradoxical idea of isolation within a bustling metropolis, inner city life and the daily commute, the reverb-soaked, lush and layered sounds of shoegaze, and the ethereal and euphoric feel of Balearic house music and European underground disco. One fan likened the music to ‘Cut Copy’s dancier, Euro-house tracks’, and other reactions to the record included “Really beautiful and very melodic”, “Movement is excellent and it’s an album I could see myself putting on if I had people over or were holding a house party”, “On Santiago the synths are reminding me of Memory Tapes’ 2009 album Seek Magic” and “The music is really amazing, I like it so much”.

The record received over 1000 plays during its first week of release on Bandcamp and has so far accrued almost 10000 on Soundcloud.

Weekend Revolutionaries is currently recording the follow-up record to Movement which is estimated to be completed some time in 2013. Some speculate that it may be the final record of the project, and it is scheduled to be released on Amdiscs.
