Los Angeles, California, United States (2004 – present)

Warpaint is a psychedelic rock band which formed in 2004 in Los Angeles, California, United States. The band consists of Theresa Wayman (vocals, guitar), Emily Kokal (vocals, guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (vocals, bass), and Stella Mozgawa (drums). The band’s original drummer, Shannyn Sossamon, left the band in 2008 and was replaced by Mozgawa.

The band weaves intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals, and driving post-punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between the soundscapes of psychedelia and intimacy. The group has gone through many line-up changes, including actress Shannyn Sossamon and Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer.

In early 2009, their self-released debut EP “Exquisite Corpse” soared straight to #1 on legendary Los Angeles Amoeba Records’ local artists chart. By September 2009, Manimal Vinyl reissued it on CD and vinyl, complete with a new bonus track, ‘Krimson’. Mixed by John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers), the EP successfully captures the band’s sonic textures and playful dynamism that they’re notorious for creating in a live setting. With a buzz already in the air, Warpaint is now beginning to stir the masses with praise in the US and abroad. Dazed and Confused calls “Exquisite Corpse” “a collection of magical psychedelia drifting over sublime moments of raw melody courtesy of the three free ethereal vocalists,” while The Independent adds, “They make a quite lovely sound with dreamy vocals, off-kilter hazy guitars.”

I can't imagine basing my opinion of a band on their Q magazine interviews and Facebook posts. [2] they are awesome!

These girls have utterly taken over my stereo since Coachella. They hit me in all the right spots. 4AD, Post Punk, Stella's Drumming, .... best all female band ever.

Alas people, we cannot live in the past. If a band want to be at the forefront, they must take risks etc... I would like Stella's drumming to get more to the fore, and not be too electronic, more acoustic and muted; she's so great! Anyways, anything by them will make me HAPPY!

@JML897 I also agree with your first statement. I like the new album but nothing feels as fantastic as their guitar-driven sound. The guitar lines are essentially why I enjoy Warpaint so much to begin with, something that is somewhat lacking with new album. @alonewiththeowl i'm not saying there is a leader, but if there was one at this point it looks like Theresa. I much preferred when emily was handling vocal duties an Theresa was on guitar since I felt T was truly great at that, but the music is still good. Not my "dream" direction but still impeccable.

What's wrong with Theresa coming to the forefront? She's doing great, imo. So if they'd recorded an album with, let's say, mostly Stella's vocals, people would riot? Even though I personally prefer Emily's vocals, it's interesting to see what other girls are capable of - they are a band after all. I don't think there ever was a LEADER in Warpaint anyway. It makes me sad that some people think of T as some kind of Emily's deputy, standing in a shadow, because it's not like that. Oh well. Peace and love.

More than that I'd prefer them to just go back to a more guitar-driven sound than the spacey/triphop-ish thing of their new album. From their first album I think Bees/Shadows/Majesty are all fantastic and those are all Theresa songs. And then there's Beetles of course. Most of the new songs (except Disco//Very) lack a strong punch live.

I wish Theresa would stop taking such a stranglehold on the band lately. She was great in Emily's shadow but now that she's coming to the forefront and Emily is taking more of a backseat in terms of vocals it's getting pretty boring. Stick to the guitar Theresa, you excelled at that.

What she said in the Q magazine interview was well meant, she just probably shouldn't have used the buzzword "slut."
