Biography

Bergen, Norway (2003 – present)

Wardruna is a Norwegian musical constellation set out to explore and evoke the depths of heathen Germanic wisdom and spirituality. Musically Wardruna has its main focus on the cultic musical language found in the near-forgotten arts of galdr, seidr and the daily acts of the cultic life, mixed with impulses from Scandinavian and Nordic folk music. They formed in 2003 in Bergen, Norway.

The album entitled ‘Gap var Ginnunga’ is the first in a planned trilogy that will interpret the runes of the Elder Futhark. Each album will feature eight runes, but not in accordance with the order of the three aettirs (families), which is most commonly used. Recordings partly take place outdoors at locations relevant to the different runes. The utilized instruments are mainly old and historical instruments such as deer-hide frame drums and ceremonial drums, mouth harp (Jew’s harp), clove/hoof rattles from deer and goat, bone flute, goat and cow horns, Hardanger fiddle and bowed lyre, also more unconventional inputs like trees, stones, water, fire etc. are employed to enhance the nature of the rune being ‘portrayed’.

Belarusians forward. For Batka. Everyone who is distant from Lukashenko more than 500km suck my dick with the smell of Slavic Bulba./белорусы, вперед. За батьку. Все, кто отдален от Лукашенко более чем на 500км сосет мой славянский хуй с запахом бульбы.

I could have never imagined how they evolved their style. I always thought three albums would be too much for this somehow limited way of making music, despite of how much I like it. But Yggdrasil really proved me wrong since there are so many new elements to it. What an absolutely awesome album of a great dense atmosphere fitting perfectly to reading some Edda stuff.

Absolutely fantastic band. I'm taking a seminar on the Viking Age this term and 'Yggdrasil' is the perfect soundtrack for pouring over the old sagas and Christian/Muslim accounts of the 9th and 10th centuries.

don't forget Ulf's other project, Sephiroth. There is some underground American stuff that can be quite close to Wardruna such a Ruhr Hunter and other stuff on Glass Throat Recordings.

Also a bit similar is Sowulo (http://www.last.fm/music/Sowulo). They don't have a lot of music on lastfm yet, but you can find them on youtube.
