October 7th 1957, Rothenburg
Walter Christian Rothe was born October 7th in 1957 in Rothenburg, Germany, out of Mina Luise Hertzer (actress) and Walter Gustaf Rothe (composer) Music was always present in the house; his sister Susanne played guitar, Cornelia sung, and Yvonne chased the boys… At the age of six, Walter set his first steps in music with a harmonica, a present from his mother. Soon he turned to some louder instruments as he banged away on metal boxes and wooden crates. His parents send him off to music school for percussion.
Walter founded his first band when he was 14 - The Thunderbirds, in which he played the electric guitar with a lot of effect pedals (a sign of things to come). Several other bands followed, but Walter wanted more and different… He was on a quest to find the ultimate instrument with which he could express himself better, and which would enable him to compose and perform alone. In 1975 he finally found what he craved so much for: a Korg MiniKorg 700S, a rather odd and peculiar little monophonic synthesizer. Despite being quite a limited instrument, Walter became very adept at mastering this keyboard, and up to this day it is still used for his signature soaring and wheeping solos, which define so much of his sound.
Walter released his first solo-album Solitude in 1980, with many more albums to follow. In the meantime, Walter was scoring film music for local directors, and got his first Hollywood hit in 1990 with The Finest Hour (aka Desert Shield), a movie starring Rob Lowe and Tracy Griffith, directed by Shimon Dotan. More Hollywood scores followed, and many ballet-, theatre and opera performances. After being the sound designer for Het Ballet van Vlaanderen for many years, Walter earned more accolades by designing the sound for famous musicals like Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, My Fair Lady, and many more…
