Adelaide, Australia (1993 – present)

Virgin Black is a band formed in Adelaide, Australia in 1993. Virgin Black currently consists of the founding members and main songwriters Samantha Escarbe (lead guitar, cello) and Rowan London (keyboard, vocals), with Grayh (bass) and Luke Faz (drums) joining in 2007. The group explains the meaning of its name as “the juxtaposition of purity and humanity’s darkness”.

After the release of a self-titled demo album in 1996, the group began gaining international recognition with 1998’s “Trance” EP, signing with The End Records a year later.
Boasting a complex cinematic sound both and metallic in nature, their debut album “Sombre Romantic” followed in 2000 and saw their core lineup augmented by choirs and string sections in the studio, the better to embellish their grandiose mood metal.

The second album “Elegant…And Dying” (2003) has a sad, epic but romantic sound. The extremely emotional arrangements are further enhanced by Rowan London’s unique mournful yet poetic singing style. The songs are presented with numerous angles and at times coming out as soundtrack scores, at others as classical compositions or even as subtle weeping lullabies that make the music as dynamic as it is dark and passionate.

....And I'm suffering, Requiem, Kyrie, rest eternal, Lacrimosa, Opera de romanci... There has been many times a case where a song reflects how you feel but damn! No group has ever been able to reflect the lowest of my low. I wish them best of luck

Fortissimo is fantastic and just as good as a death doom album as Mezzo forte is as a gothic/orchestral one. Perhaps because it's heavier than the previous album a lot of fans found that offputting?

I don't get why some critics and fans have shunned "Requiem: Fortissimo," but I think it is because they do not understand the meaning of the titles in this trilogy. "Mezzo Forte" means "moderately loud." "Fortissimo" means "very very loud." "Pianissimo" means very very soft, so expect it to be the softest of all the albums. As a whole, the trilogy when played in whichever order you want, offers three completely different moods. It's a brilliant idea IMO, and offers a far more unique experience than a trilogy of nearly identical albums.

"Dear Santa, this year I've been a good kid. I worked hard, I cooked healthy food for my kids (even if most of the times they refused to taste it), I cleaned my house regularly, I stayed away from my razor of sin and I've been relatively content, if not happy most of the year round, despite what the universe threw our way. For this year, I ask for only one thing (which is not a job because I know even you can't make miracles happen), please Santa, i want, I need, I require Pianissimo." Aaaah, one could hope, can't she?

Even if they never release Pianissimo, they've left a great legacy behind.

I can see why people pin them as being a christian band, but I think they're far from being one. The members themselves have made it clear before that they are NOT a Christian band. But then again who cares, we all interpret things differently.
