Ah! It must be said that the Virgin Suta are from Beja, south of Portugal… and there, time is a relative thing.
With the ever present counselling and production skills of Hélder Gonçalves [known composer, producer and leader of one of the most charismatic Portuguese bands - Clã], Virgem Suta toiled very hard untill they reached a point in their work they were pleased with. In that dozen songs that make up the disk, through repeated hearings, one can see the features that enrapture all those that come across them . Although contemporary, they don’t discard tradition and their songs ooze with Portugality. Make no mistake, if they were Spaniards, they would play castanets. So, they play adufe and cavaquinho because it is natural to them. All this is alongside an irony that appears at times unusual and does not ellicit an easy laugh, more like a slow grin that comes only after having deconstructed their messages.
Virgem Suta are Nuno Figueiredo and Jorge Benvinda.
