Violet Smoke is a band based out of Dhaka, Bangladesh, featuring Mohtesham on vocals and Shihab on instrumentation. Beginning in January, 2006, Violet Smoke has exploded on to the Bangladesh music scene, crafting melodies out of simple chord progressions and quiet beats. Differing from other contemporary Bangladesh bands in terms of their music style, Violet Smoke have foregone the current grunge and heavy metal-inspired riffs for a quiet, subtle sound that draws the listener in to their own world of quiet desperation.
Violet Smoke’s two members never imagined they would get as far as they have. In the short seven months of their existence, they have already completed an entire album worth of material and more. At the same time, they have built up a small but strong fan base that encourages them to keep creating. Violet Smoke’s fusion of Western music genres like jazz and blues with traditional Bangla lyrics to create not just music, but an atmosphere has been garnering more and more support from fans who are captivated by the band’s humble tunes.
Besides devoting their time to creating music, the band’s members still juggle extremely busy schedules on their own. Mohtesham is a Business Administration student, and Shihab studies Economics and works in an economic research firm. What started as a side project for these guys has now blossomed into a full-fledged music revolution in the underground music scene, and is their main inspiration for continuing their work.
