  • Violent Femmes - Add It Up (1981-1993)

    20 Dec 2008, 12:31 by jheisel

I've long made the argument that in the case of the Violent Femmes, there are only two albums you need: their self-titled debut, and Add It Up (1981-1993), their best of. In high school I listened to this best of so much, that coming back to it now is like revisiting an old friend. I know every song on here by heart, and could play the entire record in my head with no problems. Listening to this just reminds me of how great that first LP was, and since my copy is on vinyl in my parents' basement (one night at college, after having a bit too much to drink, the LP slipped out of my hands as I was turning sides, and in a frantic effort to catch it before it hit the ground, I scratched side one, effectively ruining half of this band's best record. Then I wrote about that incident as an intro to a campus newspaper review of whatever the Femmes' current album was, and their lame-ass editorial staff removed the part about me being drunk, making it look as if I was just some sort of jackass who…
  • It Should Have Been a Hit: The Top Ten Songs at 4:42 and 4:43

    12 Dec 2008, 08:58 by rockrobster23

"It should have been a hit." We've all said it about a favorite song that didn't attain the popularity it deserved. But not every good song should have been a hit; to argue otherwise is just to play a game called "what if the whole world shared my taste?" Not every good song is built for mass appeal, and those songs have nothing to be ashamed of.

This is a story about a song that really should have been a hit. I know because I saw it happen, albeit in a small market disconnected from any kind of national influence. Here's the story:

When I was a teenager, I had the privilege of working at and managing the nation's only student-run high school radio station, WBRH. As you can see if you clicked the link, it now broadcasts jazz and blues, but when I was there in the early 80s, we played rock in the afternoons and evenings. When I became the student station manager in 1982, our core audience was a staunchly conservative group of classic rockers and metalheads: Led Zep, Black Sabbath, REO Speedwagon, etc. …
  • Five Best Albums That Sum Up Teen Years

    18 May 2008, 12:51 by HendrixFan42

There are some albums that just sum up all the feeling that adolescents face. They could be silly and juvenile, frantic and haunting, nostalgic and longing, or depressing and confused. Here are the five best albums that for whatever reason bring to mind the teenage years, in my humble opinion of course.

5.) Take Off Your Pants and Jacket Blink 182 actually sounded like they were 15, even though they were in their mid 20s on this 2001 release. Tom Delongue's nasally angst ridden vocals mesh with amateurish but universal lyrics about dates, concerts and cynical feelings about Christmas. Key Tracks: First DateThe Rock Show
4.) #1 Record The great 70s cult band Big Star mixed shimmering Byrds guitars and melodies with gentle, nostalgic songs about growing up. Even though they were indebted to 60s pop, they ended up influencing later bands like R.E.M. and Teenage Fanclub. Key Tracks:In The Street Thirteen
3.) Quadrophenia Tommy is more famous and has more hits, but Quadrophenia is arguably the better album. …
  • 30 questions about 30 awesome songs

    6 May 2008, 14:46 by colourofsleep

OK! First up, because I tend to listen to whole albums and artists more than individual songs, we have a bit of a tie situation going on... actually, a major tie situation going on. So I'll separate said songs with which song I like better, obviously. And there'll be artists repeated all over the place, sorry.

    1. How does 2 make you feel?
A little bit mental, to be honest.

    2. To whom would you sing/play 24?
    Black Girls
To someone that wants to have a fucking good time. Oh, to be able to play anything close to that sax freak-out.

    3. Is there a way 15 could make you happy?
    Gimme The Car
Haha, it's funny. Violent Femmes, kinda happy in a bittersweet way.

    4. Would you dance to 25?
    Rozalia Bizarre
Hell yeah! I have on the odd occasion. That is an incredibly danceable song.

    5. What's the best thing about 8?
    Viscera Eyes
Everything really, it's a pretty complete package. I do love the way the intro builds up to the song…

  • Song Scramble

    30 Aug 2007, 04:53 by grungezombie

    Discovered in violenzae's journal:

Rules: Put your playlist on shuffle and write down the first 25 songs you get:

I will do 20, because it's late and I'm tired.

    1. John Doe
    2. Electric Head Part 1 (The Agony)
    3. Add It Up
    4. The Real Thing
    5. DDevil
    6. Coattails Of A Dead Man
    7. Freedom
    8. Eulogy
    9. Floods
    10. Wish You Were Here
    11. Sam Hall
    12. Molly's Lips
    13. Big Balls
    14. Dirt
    15. Under the Bridge
    16. Long in the Tooth
    17. Ruiner
    18. Magic Man
    19. Music
    20. King for a Day

Now take the first line from the first song, the second line from the second song, third line from the third song, etc. and put them in order below to make your scrambled song. If the song doesn't have enough lines loop back to the beginning--like if you need the 22nd line but the song only has 15 lines, you start counting again with the first line as line 16 and end up using line 7.

    31 Jul 2007, 16:47 by drotzlocinac

LOL), i nisu nas iznevjerili.
  • Ma poi cosa significa "Blister in the Sun"?

    23 May 2007, 10:42 by ermannov

Mar 22 Mag – Violent Femmes, Zen Circus
