All eras have their good music and bad. For example, in the late 70s you had the beginnings of punk
clashing against disco
and ridiculously sappy love ballads that make me want to voluntarily go deaf.
For the most part, I think the 80s was a not so great time for music. Top 40 radio brought us cheesy metal like Motley Crue
and bubble gum pop acts such as Tiffany
and paved the way for musical travesties like Britney Spears
. As I'm not a complete hipster, I tend not to like music for the irony. However, there are a few gems to be found.
I've decided to make a list of my top 10 favourite tracks of the decade, specifically from new wave
bands from the period 1980-1989. This means no punk like The Dead Kennedys
, blues rock
like David Wilcox
or college rock
like The Pixies.
In addition, I'm only allowing one track per band and limiting my list to singles, despite how good non-singles can be. Just because it's easier.
