Vienna Teng (born Cynthia Yih Shih on October 3, 1978) is a Taiwanese American pianist and singer-songwriter based in New York City. She began studying classical piano at the age of 5. She took her stage name “Vienna” from the Austrian city famous for its musical history, and “Teng” from the surname of famous Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng.

Teng’s musical style incorporates folk, pop, classical piano, and a cappella influences. She uses piano as her primary instrument and charges her lyrics with emotion, narrative, and personal history. Teng is a baseline alto but sings over a wide range.

Teng has released four studio albums: Waking Hour (2002), Warm Strangers (2004), Dreaming Through The Noise (2006), and Inland Territory (2009).

every day i put a different song of hers on repeat. when i first discovered her it was eric's song. a week ago it was homecoming, then it was city hall, then it was nothing without you, and now it's shasta. i feel like i need to listen to her songs every day. it just helps me get through. (:

Inland Territory actually may have dethroned Waking Hour as my favorite Vienna album...and that's not an easy thing to do. Brilliant artist. Can't wait for the live-recording concerts in SF.
