Biography
Vasile Pandelescu was born in 1944, in the Gaesti village, Dambovita, Romania, from a gypsy family. His father was a cymbal player, whom he inherited the love the music from. He picked up the accordeon in 1956, at the age of 12. Three years later, he becomes appreciated in his native village. He plays in different groups until 1969, when he joins master Gheorghe Zamfir's group whom he goes abroad with to tour in different countries, the most notable ones being SUA and UK. He dies in 2004, at the age of 60. He is considered to be Romania's best accordeon player, and one of the best in the world, having a great influence on the players in the south eastern region of Central Europe.
Style: His repertory is mainly made out of fast dancing songs, combining styles from bigger areas, which gives him the unique style for that period of time. He's no stranger, however, to slower and sad songs, knows as "doine" and several folk ballads and love songs. He "stole" techniques and styles of playing from lots of accordeonists and even violin players, which gave him the unique style he impressed generations with. Also, for Pandelescu, virtuosity is just a way of expressing himself as an artist, and, by no means, the musical goal he was reaching for.
