Here at the glass, all the usual problems
All the habitual farce
You ask in uncertain voice, what you should do
As if there were a choice but to carry on miming the song

Is this madness just a recurring wave of total emotion or a hide for the undercover man

Saw VDGG at Weely festival in 71 and various gigs around Manchester. It felt like my band back then, so few had heard of them. Very few things from then sound this good now. True genius.

I wonder who the "undercover man" refers to and whether the song alludes to something real or the whole scenario is fictional.

Terrific. Saw VdGG a couple of times pre-split/hiatus, and then a few times after they got going again in 75. Always a great intense live show (one time after 'cake' one of our number couldn't take it in the confines of the Marquee and had to run out) and this is one of my favourite VdGG numbers.

This was one of our favourite songs when I was 16. We used to go out round the pubs in Frodsham and then walk home singing this. Still love it now.

I agree with molly_polliwog: "this has one of the most wonderfully bonkers vocal melodies ever."

Commanding stuff. Saw Hammill solo in KC in 2009 . You could've heard a pin drop. He took over the room.
