My absolutely favorite song by Van der Graaf Generator (and subsequently any band). That's a tough decision to make too, because I like so much that this band and other prog bands have put out, but the music is just so gripping, and the lyrics so existential, deep and ultimately inspiring. People will call a 12 minute song "too long" but for me this song could go on for hours in the same vein, such an amazing song, and the ending almost always brings me to tears. What an absolutely fantastic work. I cringe when ever this album is slighted as a let down or anything less than Van der Graaf Generator's best or at the very least second best work.
The most beautiful song for me. I can't be arsed to type it all in, but pauldove down there has it exactly right, I was equally profoundly moved by it as a teen and still am. Beautiful, ultimately uplifting
"the peak's distance breaks my heart, for I never shall see it, still I play my part, believing that what waits for us is the cosmos compared to the dust of the past". This utopianistic world view had a profound effect on me when I first heard this as a teenager. It's effected how I live my life to this day; even though I know that the future that I'm working to build will almost certainly never exist, in any of our lifetimes, I'll believe in it and play my part.
