About this album

Van Morrison’s lost masterpiece- recorded in 1974 when he returned to Ireland for several months after a five (or so) year period of exile in the USA. It marks a return to the stream of conscious poetry and soft instrumentation that defined Astral Weeks - but it also packs some punches in the more blues /rocky ‘Bulbs’ and ‘Cul-de-sac’ (the later featuring one of Van’s best moments of jazz/scat improvisionational singing). Sinead O’ Connor has repeatedly referred to it as a masterpiece and inspiration.

@bohemian_chic Great thoughts! I agree with you. Veedon Fleece is one of Morrison's absolute best and, like Astral Weeks, is a real "song cycle" that forms a cohesive whole and makes no concessions to being commercial or trendy.

This is one Van Morrison record that seems to have gotten better with age. The objectivity of hindsight reveals that Veedon Fleece certainly belongs with Astral Weeks, Moondance, His Band and Streetchoir, Tupelo Honey and St. Dominic's Preview as Van's greatest work. In my opinion it is almost as great as the first two. Van's singing here is as passionate as you will ever hear it. The music lays the groundwork for everything that comes after in the Van canon and is as soulful as any music he made. It is interesting that of his great 1970's recordings, only this and Astral Weeks do not have a song meant to be a possible "single" to be marketed on the radio. The music's the thing here, and if his fans want to come along they'll be rewarded. If you love Van Morrison get Veedon Fleece if you don't already have it.

Ever so slowly growing on me; Cul de Sac remains the only song on here that I don't think is great.

His best album, but the first 2 and the last 2 songs are the lower quality. But the middle part is just plain perfect :D

One of my favorite albums to listen to in autumn, on a cool day, with the windows open.
