City of San Marino

Valentina Monetta (born 1 March 1975, City of San Marino) is a Sammarinese singer known for her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest of 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Valentina has been singing for years and sang in several bands and ensembles, such as Parafunky, Tiberio, Harem-B, 2blackBluesmobile & My Funky Valentine. In 2011 she released her debut album ‘Il mio gioco preferito’. Soon after this, Valentina first became involved in the Eurovision Song Contest. Previously, Monetta sent in the song “Se non ci sei tu” for the San Marino national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, but she was not selected by San Marino RTV. The song was entered under the moniker Tina B and can be found online.

Starting with the satirical “The Social Network Song (oh oh–uh–oh oh)”, which ended in 14th place at the 2012 contest in Baku. The track was originally entered as ‘’Facebook uh oh oh’‘, but had to be altered due to the fact that Facebook is registered commercial brand.

Valentina turned things around with her 2013 entry, the massive fan favourite “Crisalide (vola)”, at the 2013 contest in Mälmo. Despite finishing 2nd in the annual poll amongst the official fanclubs and being heavily hyped by fans, San Marino ended up coming 11th in the 2nd semi final, thus missing out of the final for the 4th time.

For the upcoming 2014 contest in Copenhagen, Valentina was once again selected internally by SMTV, the Sammarinese broadcaster. After the 2013 contest Valentina released the album ‘LA Storia Di Valentina Monetta, capturing various versions of her 2 Eurovision entries as well as tracks from her previously released debut album.

I second what Totenmond has expressed. It was disappointing to see Valentina so low down but also expected. We must remember that it was a win in itself, how against all odds, Valentina made the final this year. San Marino's name being called out has got to be one of the greatest Eurovision moments ever and it was clear that at that moment, Valentina had just won a personal battle. These undeniably old fashioned Ralph Siegel compositions she's sung these past three years have brought me a lot of joy. As you said, Valentina is a very down to earth, humble girl. She cried in a video interview when a message I had sent was read out to her. Her interpretation of "Maybe" was achingly beautiful. It was bittersweet. You really feel the pain and longing in her voice. Not many artists (certainly today) are as honest with what they present to us. I'm grateful to Ralph for caring so much for Valentina and putting things right. I'm pretty sure this isn't the last we'll be seeing of her as well.

Hm, that's kind of weird coming from a German when Ralph Siegel proved to send many quality songs to Eurovision in the past, particulary in the late 70's/early 80's (even securing that one win in '82). Recently it's happened as well with Montenegro in 2009 and this recent Valentina trilogy. Felt a bit bad for seeing this last song ranking so low in the final. I don't know if it's the end of the road for Valentina in ESC but in case it is she's proven her value to Europe. From the "shady" humble beginings with the social network song to this final number last night. Above all this she has also proven to be a really down to earth, likeable person with talent, which is not that common of a thing. Plenty of other talented people out there, but if their souls could speak...

Hopefully now that she finally made the final (and lost there) Ralph Siegel quits trying again.

I'm happy to see her in the final, but I liked more "Crisalide" last year. Good luck Valentina tonight! :)
