Biography

Take the weirdest of Discipline-era King Crimson, multiply it by 100. You’ll have something that might resemble Upsilon Acrux, whose music at one time or another has been referred to as “brutal prog”.

Hailing from Los Angeles, and originating in Vista, CA, this group has gone through well over 10 members and several line-ups, including everything from a 2-piece to over 5. Regardless of the amount of members, Upsilon Acrux are sure to create material that is entirely unconventional, consistently superb, intelligent, rhythmically labyrinthine, and largely alien even to the more experimental and outgoing bands around these days.

Classic Moog keyboards (often used in amusing ways), two drummers (one on the left channel, one on the right), and an all acoustic guitar/bass duo from another world make for an engaging progressive rock experience that manages to simultaneously make light of the extreme pretentiousness of math rock and make your head spin in circles from the pseudo-improvised madness.

All of their albums are good because they have something in common, they're brutal as fuck. This is possibly the most genuinely extreme and maddening music I've ever heard. They started out sounding primitive and have been evolving with every release. Galapagos was such a stunning balance of development and deconstruction to me. Upsilon Acrux makes me feel like a barbarian or a caveman and I wander the tundra smashing things with a club. Ya dig?

Take King Crimson and Yes and cook it up in a spoon. Upsilon Acrux is freebasing prog.

Hey folks. Just a heads up to let you know that I've tried to upload a new live release from Upsilon, but have encountered system problems that I am working with last.fm to resolve. All of the tracks appear okay, except for track 8 (bicycle race) which is not the version on the live release. I'll post a followup when things are resolved -- in the interim, sorry for any confusion. Hope you enjoy. Take care ...
