The Upper Valley Psychedelic Continuum is a music collective headquartered on a farm in the bucolic “Upper Valley” region of New Hampshire. It was started by David Roby in 1997 upon arriving in the area after an 8-year stay in New York City’s fabled Lower East Side. He had been active in the East Village music scene; he was a co-founder of the bands The Giant Mums & Lid. In 1991 he started the indie label Quixotic Records with the members of Airlines and Lid; it released recordings by those three bands as well as Bugskull, Swimmer, 18th Dye, Kenny Young, and Halcion. In addition to varied short-lived projects, he appeared on two tracks on the debut LP from The Wharton Tiers Ensemble before deciding to return to his native New Hampshire to start the next phase of life. This would be the Upper Valley Psychedelic Continuum, ultimately made up of a loose confederation of Upper Valley bands: Together Market, Deep Submergence Unit, The Beautiful Acid-Loving Plants, Memory Loss Apartment, the Magic Squares, the Ro-B-ys, and Edible Village. The bands all share one concept: to expand the listener’s consciousness through recorded sound & music.
