About this album

Barking is the title of Underworld’s first album in three years, and their first to be constructed with a brilliant cast of co-conspirators. All the tracks were written by the band in their Essex studio before being given to handpicked studio heads from across the whole spectrum of dance music to add some of their style and creativity to the band’s raw material. The result is a pimped-up Underworld record and their finest collection of songs in over a decade.

From the first undulating pulses of submariner bass, the first vocals – soft like a whisper in the ear – and the first fizz of hi-hats that force along the pace, the sound is unmistakably Underworld. Electronics wrapped effortlessly around songs; streams of consciousness lyrics that form indelible images; a perfectly balanced mix of melody and rhythm. Underworld’s sixth studio album is a thundering return to form, although it’s fair to say that the band responsible have never really been below par.

I'm slowly, slowly starting to adore this. Initially I was admittedly prejudiced about the outside collaborations, probably because I was really yearning for another album of undiluted and unsullied Underworld, the promise of the Riverrun EP's was so enticing. So yeah, I listened to "Scribble" just prior to the album's release and, having known and loved its precursor "You Do Scribble", found the apparent "dumbing-down" of the rhythm and seemingly contrived lyrics and melodies pretty appalling. So I put it to one side for a while, concluding that Underworld had finally worn out their welcome. The first time I played it straight through I thought it was really quite dull. I tried again recently and enjoyed it immensely, except for that gratuitous ballad at the end which is terrible.

Hated it at first, but then I revisited some Underworld Mk 1. and earlier Freur more recently and have come to appreciate Barking as more a cohesive latter day Pop effort. I'd almost say Hyde & Smith have come full circle in some respects. It's not to say 'Darker' Underworld isn't my favourite though.

I think I was too harsh on this when it first released. It's grown on me quite a bit. Still not my favorite, but a good fun romp.

When you're one of the bands with the best production skillz in the world, you don't need other people messing with your album. I'll take their other untouched work, thank you. This album is just not worthy of the Underworld moniker. Anxiously awaiting a better work from them.

unddercharlezz согласен. если бы не они, я бы назвал этот альбом очень хорошим. а так... ждешь от них чего-то большего. чего-то что взорвало бы мозг. but.. still good.. no matter what

Cool album. Not their best, but really loaded with positive energy that hits the spot perfectly whenever morale gets low.

i hated the single, was convinced they'd jumped the shark. but then i got the album and had a good listen and i'm starting to think in many ways it's the best thing they've ever done. it's like Pet Shop Boys produced an Underworld Mk 1 album. and that's a good thing IMO. The engineering/mixing/mastering is spot on too. So if you like the more moody experimental UW you'll hate this, but if you like well produced pop that isn't pap, this record is the bomb, as they say.

I'm sure glad I'm not the only one in the world who doesn't like it.
