Udit Narayan is a leading Bollywood playback singer who was born in Nepal but migrated to Mumbai in the early 80’s and trained in classical singing. He sung in several smaller films but his big break came as the voice of Aamir Khan in the 1989 movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Udit has never looked back since then and over the years, has also sung in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati & Oriya. Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu had a fierce rivalry going on in the late 90’s and early 00’s wherein Sanu was the early winner but has since then drifted into oblivion. Udit meanwhile, forayed into singing in South Indian languages and though initially was not well-received, became successful later on.
Alka Yagnik has been the most prolific and successful female playback singer post the 90’s. She is trained in classical singing and her big break into bollywood was the super hit track Ek Do Teen from Tezaab. She has also sung in Punjabi, Marathi and Gujarati languages. Over the past decade or so, she has been the de facto voice of many a bollywood leading ladies. She has had some healthy competition from peers like Kavitha Krishnamurthy early on in her career and from upcoming singers like Shreya Ghosal and Sunidhi Chauhan in more recent times.
