About This Track

“Surrender” is the ninth song from U2’s third album War. This song is notable for U2’s guitarist The Edge’s use of a German-made Epiphone lap steel.

The song was played live at 118 shows on the War and Unforgettable Fire Tours. It was one of three songs played a few months before the release of the album, making its live debut on December 1, 1982, along with “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “New Year’s Day”.

“Surrender” serves as the opening song on U2’s first home video release, Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky. However, the 25th anniversary DVD release of the concert shows that the song was actually the fifth song played on the evening of June 5, 1983; editing of the video footage made it appear to be the opening song.

The female backing vocals were provided by Kid Creole’s Coconuts.

Oh, the city's afire A passionate flame It knows me by name Oh, the city's desire To take me for more and more It's in the street, getting under my feet It's in the air, it's everywhere I look for you It's in the things I do and say If I wanna live I gotta Die to myself someday

This song is beautifully textured and it reminds me of Blade Runner's urban cityscape a lot, which is a very good thing. They should do more stuff like this. NLOTH was a turd compared to this masterpiece of a song and the album it's on. Every album from Pop on has been decent at best and horrible at worst.(hint hint Horizon)

U2 were, and still are an incredibly versatile band. They might not have got there first [see Talking Heads], but were 'indie-dance' about a decade before the phrase got coined. This is a funky disco classic, but with philosophical weight, and of course some glorious 'woh-oh-wohing' to rival Lou Reed's Satellite Of Love. Beautiful. One of their very best songs.
