Biography

Tyler Bates is a music producer and for films, TV and video games.

His most known work includes Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Halloween II, The Devil’s Rejects, Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen, and Sucker Punch; Neil Marshall’s Doomsday, See No Evil and James Gunn’s Slither. In 2011 he scored Emilio Estevez’s The Way, William Friedkin’s Killer Joe, Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian, Chris Gorak’s The Darkest Hour, and James Gunn’s Super.

During his formative years the limitations of his home studio equipment became an integral part of his creative process; sparking an experimental approach in effort to complete his compositional ideas. At age thirteen he started daisy-chaining cassette recorders to produce multi-track recordings. An Echoplex and other sound mutation devices became the gateway to his atmospheric explorations and counter-rhythmic sensibilities, as he studied the effects of varying tape speeds on live and pre-recorded sound sources.

By nineteen, Tyler managed a trading firm in the stock market, while enjoying the beginnings of great success in Chicago-based bands. But he could not ignore the calling to expand his career in music. In 1993, fueled by an offer to score a movie that paid less than a months rent, Tyler returned to his native Los Angeles with zero experience in making music for films, and successfully produced his first score.

Snutskallar: I wholeheartedly agree. It's funny, on one hand we have Basil Poledouris' masterpiece, one of the greatest film scores ever written, on the other end of the spectrum, we have Tyler Bates' contribution - one of the most incompetent and downright awful scores ever composed, nothing less than an insult to the legacy of Conan, Poledouris, not to mention an insult to the human ear. Figures.

His soundtrack on Conan was such an insulting load of crap - soulless, stock and unmemorable. Come on, did this guy even TRY to recapture some of the spirit that Poledouris imparted on the original Conan movie? One almost gets the impression he never bothered watching the original. Even Conan the Destroyer, as cheesy as it was, had a memorable theme. Was there a single scene in the reboot where the music grabbed you? What a talentless hack.

Conan score is a piece of shit. I'm a fan of the literary works, and the Arnie films - this included Poledouris score which, despite the films' shortcomings, created such amazing atmosphere that really evoked visions of Robert E. Howard's world in my mind's eye. But Tyler's score is, as Mulgorea put it, generic shit, 1h 10min of mere background music with nothing special or memorable whatsoever.
