About this album

Stand Up and Fight is the third album by the Finnish / band Turisas, released on February 23, 2011 through Century Media. The album continues to develop the themes started by The Varangian Way, but it is not actually a sequel.

The lyrics, dealing with the 11th century Byzantine Empire have a universal appeal and are applicable to the modern world. Musically, the band claims to have incorporated more progressive elements, as well as influences from such genres as the 1980s stadium rock. For the first time, real string and horn sections were used to record the album.

I agree fully with CarrierOfEchoes. These two newest ones are peculiar things. They are growers if any albums ever were. That, and you don't even remember how good they are until you listen to them. They are not so underliningly traditional pagan/folk Turisas as those two first albums, but they are... somehow grandiose in their own right. Very different. They seem to get better and better when you listen to them again and again. The material is not mainly catchy or otherwise memorable, but damn is it good when you get into it! Just today I realized how epic song End of an Empire is, for instance. You discover new things with these albums every time.

Finally got round to picking this up today. I definitely think it'll be a grower, just as Turisas2013 was. When I first heard that it sounded just, well, not Turisas. A few listens though and it's recognisably Turisas just evolved - which is no bad thing at all.

Well, I know, taste is different, but if I have a look at The Varangian Way which was an excellent piece of music and which also included both elaborate and epic lyrics, I really have to say, it's mindblowing that Stand Up And Fight managed to reach at least the same level. It is definitely a consequent evolution (which is a neutral statement) and they do an overwhelmingly great job going on with what they've begun on their preceding CD.

Just finished reading the 'Viking' series by Tim Severin. I think I found where Nygard got his inspiration.... the last two books are hugely similar to the story in The Varangian Way and Stand Up And Fight.

I agree with what others said about this being a grower. I was quite disappointed at first, but after listening to it a number of times, I realized how great it actually is.

Gods this is amazing. I love just how much Andrew Lloyd Webber-esque ridiculousness Nygard is putting into his songwriting, it's like listening to 'Vikings - The Musical'

Way too mediocre after the grandeur of The Varangian Way.

Give it another go. I thought the same at first. It's different, yet still very good.
