Stavanger, Norway (1996 – present)

Tristania is a band from Stavanger, Norway, formed in the end of 1996 by Morten Veland (male vocals/guitars), Einar Moen (keyboards), and Kenneth Olsson (drums). Soon thereafter, the band’s original lineup was fleshed out further with the addition of guitarist Anders Hidle, bassist Rune Østerhus (who was recently replaced by Ole Vistnes), and vocalist Vibeke Stene (who has been replaced by Mariangela Demurtas).

The band’s music is usually classified as , due to its strong ties with the genre’s history in addition to the band’s use of styles and traits stereotypical of the genre. However, they pride themselves on their musical diversity, as evidenced by the evolution of their music over the course of their five studio albums.

Tristania’s earlier albums Widow’s Weeds and Beyond the Veil put a lot of focus around classical like female vocals, haunting choruses and classical instruments such as pipe organ, flutes and violins. The leading voice on many of their songs was the menacing harsh vocals of Morten Veland. The atmosphere is also achieved by quite unique sounding guitar effects.
Morten Veland left in 2000 for “musical and social differences” to form the band Sirenia.

With the release of the World of Glass album in 2001, Veland’s growls were replaced by guest vocalist Ronny Thorsen from Trail of Tears, and clean male vocals were provided by veteran guests Østen Bergøy and Jan Barkverd. Despite the new lineup and a slightly changed style that turned off some fans, the album received critical acclaim.

Adelinadarkstar, that's what you wrote means only that you're not and you've never been the real fan of this band. Greetings.

I don't even give a fuck about the new album, I don't even care if its never released. I will never listen to anything else they put out. BECAUSE VIBEKE IS NO LONGER WITH THEM.

I dislike The Emerald Piper but not because of Mary. We don't hear her enough in this song, unfortunately.

I think Mary's voice is lovely and that they will find a way to make it fit with the music on the new album, though it may not fit with the old Vibeke stuff (which I actually think it does, but that's a matter of taste I suppose).

Well, not really. I mean, if they chose someone who could fit the role, both as kind of voice and look, I don't think I'd have made such a tragedy. But in this case it was like switching from a Duchess to a fishmonger. I'm almost expecting a cover of Molly Malone for the next album. At this point yep, I'm wishing for a sudden split before they even record the album, also because I'm scared to death of the new promos: having Mary with her fair outfits and hairdressings on my front page would be a *real* tragedy. (And that's one of the main reasons why I promote this group, to get the opportunity to chose the photos before the new Tristania promos spoil my page). By the way, fishmonger because Mary's flat and wide open vowels (which proof her 'fine' technique) remind me of a women screaming at some fair to sell her fish. "Cockles and mussels, alive alive oh, alive alive oh!"

If I've good understand, for you, nobody can replace her and even if it was another singer, you still don't accept her. So, for you, the best solution was Tristania's split-up after Vibeke's departure ? It's a point of vue.

I am a fan of Tristania with Vibeke, basically. Had they chosen a more proper singer AND frontwoman, I'd have said "both Tristania and Vibeke". Anyway, Viby's the only singer about whom I think such a thing, usually I'm a fan firstly of the bands, and then of the singers. Nor have I anything against substitutes: I love the good ones (Marjan of Autumn, Nell of Theatre of Tragedy, Silje of The Gathering, for instance.)

@Realmofdarkness : Exactly ! Thank you so much :) And yes, I prefer Mary than Vibeke in the songs Sanguine Sky, Open Ground and Fate.

Mary sings Angellore perfectly. And Amy does try to sing in the same range...and fails. But her entire band fails at being Metal or Gothic. I'm hoping Mariangela will use both her lovely contralto and her lovely soprano on the next Tristania album. Not many females in Metal have as much range. None of you would give Mary such a hard time...or be so bitter...if Vibeke had left to start a new band. You need to stop acting like Mary chased Vibeke out.

Oh well, personal attacks only mean that one has run out of better arguments. Anyway, 10000+ Evanescence plays since 2003 does not mean I believe that Amy Lee can sing (live she's awful), but firtsly at least she doesn't try to sing songs meant for a voice like Vibeke's when she clearly cannot, and secondly it doesn't change the fact that, instead of 'World Of Glass', Mary sounds like 'Nails On Glass'. :)
