Trips and Falls don’t talk much. When they introduced themselves to me, all I got was an email headed ‘Band Recommendation’, a single sentence of introduction and a MySpace link – not that you really need anything more.
And all that’s in their bio now? is: “From the deserts of Arizona and the prairies of Saskatchewan Jacob Romero and Paul Gareau met at university in the city of Montreal in 2007. After a brief stint with fellow Montreal band Valleys they formed Trips and Falls. Later Amanda Caron (vocals) and Ashleigh Delaye (bass and keyboard) joined.”
So what else can I tell you about them? Well if I were to try and describe them in a sentence I would do it thus: “gentle and spooky guitar pop, alternately sadly sweet and disturbingly arrhythmic.”
And Herohill had this to say about the self-release version of their soon-to-be-Toaded album He Was Such a Quiet Boy “I honestly don’t know what it is about these songs – Jacob’s voice? e eerie vibe that creeps into the mix? e harmonies? e interesting background clanks and textures? e quirky, fragmented change of pace they throw into How Do You Do? – but whatever that is, it grabs a hold of me like a vice grip.
I find myself letting the songs play over and over again, equally confused and impressed with their tormented soul and unconventional beauty. ”
The band are: Jacob Romero – vocals, guitars & various other stuff; Paul Gareau – drums, percussion.
