@Bernician.........Thanks for the info. I've not heard the Pentangle version. I have heard Davy Grahams which is pretty good but this is so much better!

The original was not by Pentangle or by Davy Graham (Though their respective interpretations are both wonderful) It was written By Cyril Tawney and Carolyn Hester was the first to record it.

From Stewart Lee's sleevenotes: "one of the greatest recordings by any British band ever" - yep, that about sums it up.

Sounds more natural than the original. Sounds perfect for them. The original is not by Pentangle but Davy Graham.

"Nice album, good songs, good effort", I thought. Then along came this. An understated triumph. Beautiful, just beautiful.

OK, I'm converted now, since my last shout i've heard quite a lot of Trees and I am loving them more and more. This is still my favourite though

A great cover of the Pentangle song. Such a shame that they never got the recognition they deserved at the time but that's show business, unfortunately. There's a raga-like vibe to the guitar and it's good to hear them stretch out.

This is a lovely song, the best by far that I've heard by Trees as usually I'm not overawed by them. I love when a band has a chance to stretch out and build things up, which this does really well, in a way that reminds me a bit of Fairport on Sailors Life or Sloth. Love the electric guitar and piano

Stunning! Obvious comparisons to Fairport's 'A Sailor's Life' but that's no bad thing. Never heard of them before, must investigate further.

Some 38 years since first I played this version ~ it's as good now as it ever was.
