Biography

Treepeople was an indie rock band from Boise, Idaho, although they spent most of their time (and were officially based) in Seattle, Washington. The band was comprised of Pat Brown, Wayne Rhino Flower, Doug Martsch, and Scott Schmaljohn, many of whom were members of the Boise punk band State of Confusion. The band gained local notoriety and success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but after losing members to family complications and other projects, particularly Martsch and Flower to The Halo Benders (and, subsequently, Martsch to Built to Spill) the group disbanded in 1994, having released three albums and a handful of singles.

The band are typically described as having a very dense, layered sound, playing pop-influenced indie rock (similar to that of Built to Spill, but harder-edged). This contributed to its short-lived success, as most of the Seattle music scene at the time was focused on Grunge bands like Nirvana.

@Parksey10: both. It was Martsch and Scott Schmaljohn on a dual guitar & vocals attack.

so was Martsch the singer in this band or just the guitarist? it doesn't sound like him, or at least what I'm used to him sounding like in BTS. great band in any case.

This makes me wish I was born in '75 instead of '85.

Saw them live seven times (back-to-back nights in Boise - fucking Crazy Horse!), including opening for Nirvana and Dinosaur Jr. here in Portland. Easily my favorite indie rock band of the early-nineties. My buddy would mini-interview the guys after each show, whether it be in Seattle, Olympia, Portland, Boise, or otherwise. They never trusted him. The Handcuffs version on the seven is much better than what the Toxic Shock version of GRE demonstrated. Same with Neil's Down version on the split with HOLS.

Their cover of The Smiths was a big mistake, but other than that, I like them.

Their 7" tracks are the best - "Important Things", the "Web In Front" cover, "More Than a Feeling"....

after being introduced to them in '92 and seeing play a local some cunt from preston battle cruiser, they became my main musical influence for the next two-three years. they're a rare type of band; rare in that i like nearly every song by them.
