Autumn Calls is a very fruitful ambient collaboration between artist-musician Tor Lundvall and Tony Wakeford of Sol Invictus. Tor aimed to reflect the autumnal imagery and atmosphere of his native New England, and the basis of this album is his. Tony elaborated on Tor’s mixes with elements of his own and assistance from Sol associates Sarah Bradshaw, Matt Howden, Eric Roger, Jaufré Darroux and Sowila. Tor’s keyboard music and Tony’s neo-classical orchestration combine to produce a style which is for the most part quite distinct from their separate efforts. The first part of the album plays imaginatively with some interesting sounds and effects but this approach is gradually superseded by one more reminiscent of L’Orchestre Noir. This imbues the album with classical depth and development which strongly distinguishes it from the ephemeral character of so much other ambient music.
