About This Track

“Stinkfist” is a 1996 song by American rock band Tool. It was the first single and music video from their second full-length album, Ænima. Due to its name and perceived subject, the song had its lyrics altered and its title changed by TV and radio programmers, who also shortened the track.

-Interpretation-
During an interview, Keenan stated that the song is titled after a friend of drummer Danny Carey who “isn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty. ” He also stated that it can be interpreted as being about “fist-fucking” but “if you really look at it and really look at us and who we are, you’ll understand that we go a little deeper than some write-off song about fist-fucking.” Fist fucking is in actuality a metaphor for the real cause of ailment.

Keenan would introduce the song during the Ænima tour as “about choosing compassion over fear.”

-Music video-
The music video for “Stinkfist” was created with stop-motion animation techniques, and was directed by the band’s guitarist Adam Jones (who had previous experience in art direction and animation). It focuses on a race of sand people who suck on tubes and swallow nails and wires that apparently hurt them and are ejected from their bodies, after which they are put in jars and treasured. Another race of mutants has entrails that are plugged into a wall. At least one reviewer compared the visuals to the works of H. R. Giger.

@ArthurSchon While that doesn't fit completely with my interpretation, I understand what you're saying. I think most can agree that the song deals with overstimulation, as in too much being a bad thing. I like that in this context he poses the question, "What became of subtlety?" and yet the title of the song is anything but subtle.

I read somewhere an interesting association of the lyrics with something about meditation: meditation is the natural state of mind, and at birth we are "attacked" by a mass of stimuli which makes us forget this state, which would be the fullness and maximum integration with the whole. So, the song is about people who abuse their senses in many ways, they forget what is really "inside them" and seek this experience through the abuse of the senses, and the example used is that "anal fisting" thing. Well, I think this is the best interpretation of the song, although there are many others...

@lonelyfurrow Are you explaining the shallow meaning? I'm sure the deeper meaning is more acceptable, but harder for an average person to relate to.

If you don't like this, then you don't like TOOL. I love the "look" on people's faces when you explain what the song is about.

This is one of those great songs that the radio got ahold of and now I opt to skip it for Tool's other offerings. *** Anyone have any tips for getting more Puscifer out of my Puscifer Radio? I'm getting tired of sifting through shit I don't like. Shoot me a message.***
