Biography

Too Much Joy was the name of an indie music group formed in the early 1980’s in Scarsdale, New York by high-school acquaintances inspired by the music of The Clash.

The original members were Tim Quirk (vocals), Jay Blumenfield (guitar, vocals), Sandy Smallens (bass, vocals) and Tommy Vinton (drums). Smallens departed on amicable terms in 1994; William Wittman provided bass and vocals after Smallens’s retirement.

TMJ was compared to musical contemporaries They Might Be Giants and Barenaked Ladies because of its unconventional style, grassroots fan appeal, and quirky yet honest and insightful lyrics.

Man. I loved them so much in the early 90's, and I've rekindled my love for them recently. So fun.

I got this CD out of the 25 cent bin one day and man do I love it. It's like joyous rock that washes over you in a parody of real music. Always cracks me up.

I've loved this band for years. Most of my friends say, "Who?" or at best remember only their one radio hit, Crush Story, despite my efforts to educate them about the wonders of TMJ. They're still in heavy rotation on my iPod. Smash a glass!

One of the greatest bands ever, died out far too soon. Everyone needs to get a copy of Son of Sam I Am and a copy of Cereal Killers sit in a brightly lit room with a case of Shlitz malt liquor and a choco taco and bathe in the glory that is and will always be - Too Much Joy! Smash a glass M.F.'s.

Unbelievably catchy music i didnt expect to be as attracted to this band as i am very mellow and 'down to earth' what indie/alt music should be
