West Berlin, Germany (1970 – 1985)

Ton Steine Scherben (Literal English translation: “Clay Stones Shards” or “Sound Stones Shards”) were a German Anarchist rock band formed in 1970 in West Berlin, Germany when the members were all around 20 years of age. Singer Rio Reiser usually told journalists the name was taken from a description by pioneer archeologist Heinrich Schliemann of what he saw when he first came to the site of ancient Troy. Other members of the band claim it is a play on the name of German labor union Bau Steine Erden (Construction Stones Earths). It is also believed that the name is a tribute to The Rolling Stones.

They are considered to have been the first genuine German-language rock band, together with Udo Lindenberg. Their first big-stage appearance was at an Open-Air on 6 September 1970 on the Fehmarn stage where Jimi Hendrix had had his last appearance directly before. The stage went up in flames while they were still playing; probably it had been set on fire by people around Hendrix who had just received news that the event’s organizers had disappeared with all the cash, but many people believed that Ton Steine Scherben had set the stage on fire, which gave them tremendous credibility in the radical scene.

Their style can be described as somewhere between the Rolling Stones and yet-to-be-invented Punk rock. All their Albums were self-published; they published few singles and are still very rarely played on most German radio stations. Their lyrics were at the beginning quite anti-capitalist and pro-socialist.

    Ich war letztens aufm Konzert von ner CoverBand die TSS und Rio spielt, mit ein paar eigenen Liedern. Ich war total begeistert und dachte an manchen Stellen "Rio lebt noch!" Also mal ehrlich hört mal rein bei WunderbunTd!!! http://www.facebook.com/WunderbunTd

    Ich bin nicht nur für Israel, ich bin auch aus Israel. Gegen den Islam habe ich nichts, auch nichts gegen meine muslimischen Mitbürger hier. Ich habe was gegen Islamofaschisten und ihre linken Handlanger. Aber egal, ihr hört weiter TSS, ich feiere heute Unabhängigkeitstag.

    felix, dass in dieser aussage, in der du vorwirfst jemand hätte keine argumente, kein argument steckt ist dir bewusst oder? Das TSS heutzutage niemand mehr zu extremistischen Ansichten oder gar Taten führen ist auf jeden fall mal fakt (sei mal dahin gestellt ob man das gut oder schlecht findet :D) und jetz sei ruhig und hör musik an die dir gefällt und kommentier da irgendwas.

    @FuTnu: Alkoholismus verherrlichen? Marie Biermann? Das ist nun wirklich weit her geholt. Sie singt "Alkoholmädchen", ein Song von Udo Lindenberg und der ist das genaue Gegenteil von Alkoholismusverherrlichung. Aber dass TSS antidemokratische Linksromantiker mit Hang zur Gewalt als Lösung sind, ist leider direkt aus ihren Texten abzuleiten.

    As someone who occasionally parties at the house where the MC5 used to live as a commune in Ann Arbor, MI, it's probably sacrilege to say this, but... Ton Steine Scherben kicked way more ass than the MC5 ever did. They really were the voice of an entire movement... something the MC5 could only ever dream of being.

    felix, du als fanatischer anhänger der sängerin "Marie Biermann", die ganz eindeutig alkoholismus verherrlicht, solltest lieber still sein. aber ne mal ehrlich. schockierender bericht! "keine macht für niemand" und dann wird ton steine scherben nichtmal erwähnt wow. :D ziemlich um ein paar ecken gelenkt dein vorwurf, die scherben würden gewalt verherrlichen
