Great lyrics. I guess it is a little open ended. You can/have to fill in the blanks a bit. However, I think UrbanFervor got it right for the most part. Thought that bit about the end of the world was also referring to end of your world/eventually kicking the bucket.

Or, combined with the "all roads lead to the end of the world", I guess it's more about the futility of everything, how it's all going to hell eventually, which is a classic theme of Tom Waits' music.

@bryantee I don't know, probably something about being stuck in a situation where the only thing you can do is also the worst thing you can do. Fuck I love Tom Waits.

I can't figure out how to interpret the line "the only way down from the gallows is to swing." What do you guys thing?

Over the years I have collected the entire works of Tom Waits on numerous different formats. I have played each album, live CD/record, b-side collection and movie over and over again. But this track, 'Pay Me', is my favourite track by Tom Waits. It's incredible: after listening to his entire discography, that now lasts nearly 40 years, I can still find a track that leaves me breathless like this. Tom Waits' best work has never been a case of reflecting on the past and talking about how he was. I really believe he gets better with age. You may have your favourite period of Tom Waits music but I really believe he is still progressing as an artist.

It's so beautiful. I didn't expect this one to be my favorite from the new album, but it is.
