This has gotta be the better of the two versions. Following up the completely bleak and hopeless Train Song with a nostalgic, old-time version of the early-album highlight is just a completely devastating combination.

I can't decide if I like this version or the Barroom version of the song. Ah fuck it, both are good in their own right.

Haunting. Sounds like a drunk singing through an intercom at five o'clock in the morning, but it works.

I do believe Smoke was my first TW experience as well. He's a brilliant man; likely the most underrated artist of our time. Or "one of the most underrated blah blah..."

totally agree with Jammypack. Went to the movies to see "Smoke" years ago. Brilliant film and introduced to the brilliance of Tom Waits and Paul Auster at the same time. Talk about value for money!

This was brilliantly used for the final scene of the movie "Smoke". I cannot recommend the film highly enough.

It is staggering to me to think that this album came out 20 years ago. It has not aged at all.
