Biography

Known best as the powerpop band Cheap Trick’s bassist. Petersson sings lead vocals on “I Know What I Want” from Cheap Trick’s album “Dream Police” and on live versions of “Waitin’ For The Man”. He left Cheap Trick shortly after the recording of “All Shook Up”, causing the band to lose momentum and direction for several years. During his time off from the band, he released the solo album Tom Peterson And Another Language. However, Petersson rejoined Cheap Trick in 1988 for the band’s Lap of Luxury album. Despite going platinum and including the #1 hit song The Flame, Petersson blames Lap of Luxury for trapping them into a sound that they were not comfortable with, which led to the mediocre Busted and the end of their relationship with Epic.

Petersson contributes heavily to the writing of music and is credited as the inventor of the 12-string bass guitar, although only in concept. Jol Dantzig of Hamer Guitars was the actual builder of the first 12-string bass. It was Petersson’s idea to expand the 8-string bass concept by adding one more additional octave string to each bass string. It is basically a four string bass with two octave strings tuned in unison just above the fundamental bass string.

Tom Petersson continues to record and tour with Cheap Trick. Now on a new label, Cheap Trick has found more musical freedom and released Rockford in June 2006. “This new record has all the best elements of our entire catalogue. It’s by far our best work yet,” says Petersson.
