About this album
Released 28 February 2010 Purchase: http://tommilsom.bandcamp.com/album/explorers-1
Initial tweet “I recorded a new EP tonight on a whim. Who wants to hear it?” and
“Alright, here you all go. It’s called Explorers 1, and it’s not good, but it’s interesting”
From a video: “Explorers 1 began in an experimental off the cuff kind of way and never really shook that off…”
From Tom’s tumblr:
“Explorers 1 was conceived, recorded and released in one night in February 2010. It came after a tricky period that I always seem to go through after a major release where I fling new ideas around and see what sticks, and taking note of the Super Roots series of EPs by Japanese noise troupe Boredoms, I decided to chart my musical progress through a series of releases with no boundaries other than that of physical space and sound. I set down some rules to push myself out of my comfort zone and help me to hone my skills as a live musician; I wouldn’t use any sampled instruments. If I wanted strings, I’d have to learn to play the cello or force myself to come up with a suitable musical replacement with the tools I had to hand (as it happens, over the course of recording the six so far, I’ve found suitable replacements AND learned to play the cello so, y’know, success.) I wouldn’t use any studio effects like chorus or reverb.
