Cler Achel (4:28)

Cover of Aman Iman: Water Is Life

From Aman Iman: Water Is Life and 7 other releases

This is a song about wondering, about displacement and about the exile of the Touareg people following the terrible droughts of the mid 1970s and 1980s. Since these catastrophic events, homesickness and longing have become the most potent emotions in modern Touareg music.

    I. Love. This. Groove. Polyrhythmic, flowing--and a lesson in what you can do with one chord. And the women's chorus is so simple--no melisma or tremelo--but completely satisfying. Compelling as well that a song about displacement and exile has a melody that makes me want to get in my car and drive around while listening to it.

"Cler Achel" translation as per liner notes.......: "I Spent The Day" - I spend the day and still the following night, I spent a whole season travelling, I spend the day and still the following night, I spent a whole season travelling, You've gone, Mila, you've already gone and I've plunged deeper into my dreams, Whatever my thoughts, she occupies them all, and my heart cries out still, It's a time which separates the beloved from those they love, And when you think of them, painful obsessive thoughts are all that come.
