Chicago, United States (1989 – 1995)

Tim Kinsella (born October 22, 1974) is a musician from Chicago, Illinois. He has been a part of many bands including Cap’n Jazz, Joan Of Arc, Sky Corvair, Make Believe, Owls, and Friend/Enemy. He has also recorded solo under the name Tim Kinsellas.

Tim Kinsella got his start musically around 1989, when he and his brother, Mike Kinsella met Sam Zurick and Victor Villareal to form Cap’n Jazz. They were all in school at the time, and it took them a while to get serious about playing music. After going through several name changes, and adding guitarist Davey von Bohlen, the group decided to make music seriously, ultimately garnering a cult following, and fame in the independent music scene of Chicago and the midwest.

Cap’n Jazz 1989-1995

Following the release of Cap’n Jazz’s first and only album, Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards in the Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We’ve Slipped on and Egg Shells We’ve Tippy Toed Over (also known as Shmap’n Shmazz), and their last show on July 14th, 1995 they disbanded, and member Davey von Bohlen left Chicago to focus on his side project The Promise Ring, which eventually became one of the most influential bands of the 90’s.

“The Karaoke Singer's Guide to Self-Defense” is very good so far. I'm very impressed at how multitalented this man is. One of the greater artists of our generation.

Dear everyone, why am I somehow unable to get into anything else besides Shock of Being, an album I've worshipped since a chance discovery years ago on a Polyvinyl sampler? The brilliant Cap'n Jazz aside, I've tried Joan of Arc and Owls but I have yet to be mindfucked. Should I just face the facts and accept that most of Kinsella's work just isn't for me?

If humans still exist in 300 years, this motherfucker is going to be like Beethoven for them. I feel sorry for people who are dismissive of his work. I think the problem is most listeners look to music for thoughtless pleasure whereas whatever it is this guy does is more like literature than infantile rock music. We should have the foresight and historical awareness to acknowledge that most of history's great artists were scorned by critics and listeners alike in their own time because people simply were not ready for what they were doing. So, maybe give things that you are unable to understand a little more credit before outright dismissing them as pretentious garbage. That kind of quasi-critical, lazy-minded reaction is way more pretentious than someone working to create genuine, expressive works of art. It assumes that since you personally cannot grasp the content emotionally or intellectually, that the content must not have value, meaning or authenticity. C'mon now...
