Cincinnati, United States (1990 – 1998)

Named after the 1962 NY Mets’ inept first-baseman, “Marvelous” Marv Throneberry, Throneberry were a Cincinnati rock band formed by singer/guitarist Jason Arbenz and bassist Paul Cavins in 1990.
Arbenz and Cavins met while attending Miami University in 1984, where they formed the band The Liquid Hippos. In 1988 they released an album called Shellac The Bozak on Ultrasuede (the label that also released the Afghan Whigs’ debut Big Top Halloween) but spilt soon after when Jason’s brother Jordan, who played guitar in the band, along with drummer Michael Horrigan decided to concentrate instead on their other band, The Love Cowboys.

This split led to Arbenz and Cavins forming Throneberry in 1990, recruiting Steve McCabe and Sam Womelsdorf on drums and guitar respectively. Arbenz asked his former roommate Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs to produce some demos for the band, which led to a record deal with Alias Records. In 1993 they released their debut album Sangria, produced by Dulli, to positive reviews.
The band extensively toured for the next couple of years (with You Got Lucky their contribution to the Tom Petty tribute album in 1994 being their sole release during that time) and finally released their follow-up to Sangria, Trot Out The Encores in 1996. They then hit the road opening for the Afghan Whigs on their European tour with former Liquid Hobbos drummer Michael Horrigan replacing McCabe. Keeping the momentum they also released an EP later that year called Guerrilla Skies EP, which featured two new songs and covers of Neil Young’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and Gram Parson’s I’m Your Toy (Hot Burrito No.1).
