    I just got Harry Nilsson's album Aerial Ballet. His version of One is very different, it's calm and sparse, suits the gloomy mood really fine. I can see why you don't like Three Dog Night's cover, it's bombastic compared to the original. I like both versions. I can see myself preferring Nilsson's version over time.
