  • R.I.P. Lord Infamous

    22 Dec 2013, 22:50 by CraigMcDerm0tt

Lord Infamous, Three 6 Mafia's founding member and most gifted rapper, passed away yesterday. I would be remiss if I did not do a journal entry in memoriam.

Three 6 Mafia is my favorite musical group of all time. Period. Ever since I spent one Friday night riding in my buddy Brent Hogue's car bumping "Weak Azz Bitch" back in 2002, the Mafia has lived with me as an eternal trademark of how I define myself as a human being. I ride with Three 6 Mafia like I ride with the University of Tennessee Volunteers sports teams: they are the representatives of the parts of my life where I spent my formative years, Memphis and UT. My love for Triple Six is unconditional. They are the musical embodiment of Memphis, Tennessee. When I was up in Pittsburgh missing my hometown, I bumped some Three 6 and was instantly transported back to the 901. When my friends dared criticize the group, I stormed to their defense like they were my very blood. …
  • Mount Rushmore of Memphis Rap Albums: Part IV

    25 Mar 2013, 20:57 by CraigMcDerm0tt

Mystic Stylez. Three 6 Mafia. 1995.

1995. East Coast versus West Coast is entering full bloom. 2Pac was getting out of jail and releasing millions of albums. Notorious B.I.G., Wu-Tang Clan, and Nas were critical and commercial darlings. Ice Cube and Dr. Dre were reveling in success post-N.W.A, while Eazy E was dying from AIDS. Public Enemy had broken up. Jay-Z is still a year away from releasing Reasonable Doubt. “Shook Ones (Part Two)” was rattling trunks in New York and nationwide. Inland from the coasts, Cleveland’s Bone Thugs-n-Harmony was blowing up with E 1999 Eternal. And below the Mason-Dixon line, critical moments in rap history were in development.

Original Dirty South rap godfathers, Houston’s Geto Boys, had largely faded from the public eye. In their stead, a local producer named DJ Screw was blowing minds throughout Texas with a brand of rap music he dubbed “chopped and screwed.” Another up-and-coming group out of Houston, U.G.K. was cracking the Billboard Top 100. …
  • Triple 6 Mafia - DJ Paul and Juicy J's early tapes

    13 Dec 2012, 15:21 by GoddamnRapist

This is a quest of mine to locate and chronicle every early tape by DJ Paul and Juicy J. Some of them seem to be hard to find info on, some are impossible to find downloads for, and most lists I've come across are incomplete, so I'm here to try and change that. Specifically this list is for the early production work of DJ Paul and Juicy J, and will include only the underground tapes, not full length CDs, Three 6 Mafia or anything on Hypnotize Minds. All the ones not marked as missing I have if anyone is interested.

    List A-Z

Carmike - Comin' At Yo Azz (1994)

DJ Paul - Volumes 1-5 (supposedly never released, but if anyone has any additional info, let me know)
    DJ Paul - Volume 6 (1992)
    DJ Paul - Volume 7 (1992) (missing)
DJ Paul - Volume 8 (1992) (track list missing)
DJ Paul - Volume 9 (1992) (track list missing, can't find any other version than as one long track)
    DJ Paul - Volume 10 (1992)
    DJ Paul - Volume 11 (1993)
    DJ Paul - Volume 12 Part 1 (1993)
  • The Law School 40 Parts VII-VIII

    16 May 2012, 13:16 by CraigMcDerm0tt

    Part VII: Fall 2011

    1. Getting Crunk. Tommy Wright III. On the Run. 1996.

In August 2011, I visited my homeland of Memphis, TN for a couple days. Went out on Beale St. with a few of my old high school/college cronies, and vividly remember looking around at the wealth of ghetto ass black dudes surrounding me and just soaking it all in, loving every minute of it.

Tommy Wright was one of the godfathers of Memphis rap. “Getting Crunk” was such a force of nature with that diiirrrrtyy ass chorus “SOUTH MEMPHIS N***** GETTING CRUNK UP IN THIS BITCH.” At this point in my law school career, I was beginning to sense a desire to return to my 901 roots, and “Getting Crunk” and Tommy Wright in general (though it is Project Pimp’s track, really) were crucial conduits for allowing me to mentally regain an appreciation for the city that made me.

    2. Beat Connection. LCD Soundsystem. LCD Soundsystem. 2005.

“But nobody’s falling in love!” James Murphy howls. “Everybody here needs a shove!”

  • My Picks: The 50 Tracks of the Aughts, Part IV

    17 Jan 2012, 20:06 by CraigMcDerm0tt

    30. Lights Out-Santogold, Santogold, 2008.

Even as it was it trying to sell you the godawful invention known as Bud Light Lime, “Lights Out” breezed on into its listeners’ pleasure-center sweet spots, combining the ingredients of iceberg cool and window-steaming sexiness with a success that Justin Timberlake tried and failed to equal throughout the decade. The music video gives away all of the song’s secret weapons: a drummer who knows exactly what the fuck he is doing, Santogold airing it out with those beautifully whispered “Daaaarrliings,” and emotionless, Aviator-rocking female background singers. And, for what it's worth, this song played a pivotal role in getting me laid during my senior year of college—I doubt I was the only one.

    29. Float On-Modest Mouse, Good News For People Who Love Bad, 2003.

Was this really the same band that recorded “Doin’ the Cockroach” six years earlier? Lead singer Isaac Brock must have mellowed over the intervening years…
