Biography

Thomas Newman (born October 20, 1955) is an American film score composer and a member of a family who established a film-scoring dynasty in Hollywood.

He was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of composer Alfred Newman (1901-1970) (who scored Battle of Midway, My Friend Flicka, Song of Bernadette, Gentleman’s Agreement, All About Eve, and The Robe) and his wife Martha Louise, née Montgomery. He was educated at Yale University.

His uncle Lionel Newman scored Hello, Dolly!. His brother David Newman scored Anastasia, Daddy Day Care, Death to Smoochy, and Ice Age. His cousin Randy Newman is noted for series of popular albums.

Musical Style
One of the most interesting things about Newman is his change of styles, beginning with his score for American Beauty, which received critical acclaim. Before this, Newman gravitated more towards the orchestra for his music, like in most other film music. However, in American Beauty his fans witnessed his take on a minimalistic score with an array of odd instruments and a rhythmic style. Since then Newman has alternated and mixed in both his traditional sweeping orchestral scores along with his new, creative style. He is notorious among score listeners for using plenty of instruments the average listener would never have heard of.

I sincerely hope that he's the one to score The Zero Theorem. Since he'll score a film this year and The Zero Theorem has no official composer yet...

The Skyfall soundtrack perfectly fitted the film. It wasn't 100% "Bondian" but I can't imagine the film without it. I love David Arnold's work but would have no problem with Thomas Newman permanently taking over the reins of scoring the Bond films.

I've got to be honest, I love the Skyfall score. Yes, it's a very different take on scoring Bond but he's done it successfully, I think! Skyfall is the last in the prequels of Bond and the music seems to give the impression that we're off somewhere completely new when the next film comes around. There are still those typical Bond motifs hidden away in there, so all is good!

I don't think he failed at all capturing the Bond essence, I think he has learned a lot and he'd do an outstanding work if he has to score another Bond film, which I hope happens anytime soon.

Thomas Newman is good at providing old-American times atmosphere like in "Shawshank Redemption" or "Road to Perdition", but it's nothing like James Bond style. In my opinion the 007 producers just failed not only by choosing Mendes as a director but also with the soundtrack composer. Too bad. I love previous Newman's work.
