Biography

Thomas Köner is a German ambient musician and multimedia artist. He has recorded several dark ambient/drone albums, worked with field recordings, and created audiovisual installations which were exposed in various museums worldwide.

Thomas Köner was born in 1965, attended the music college in Dortmund and studied electronic music at the CEM-Studio in Arnhem. Until 1994 he worked with film sound as sound engineer. He extended his concept of sound colour to moving images, resulting in video installations and film works. 2000 the Montreal International Festival New Cinema New Media awarded him the “New Media Prize”. 2004 the Prix Ars Electronica awarded him the “Golden Nica”, and he was awarded the “Produktionspreis WDR / Deutscher Klangkunst-Preis” (german sound art award). His media installation “Suburbs Of The Void” received the Transmediale 2005 award in Berlin and was presented at La Biennale di Venezia, Teatro La Fenice as a live performance in the same year. Köners video “Nuuk” received the Tiger Cub Award (best short film) during the International Filmfestival Rotterdam 2005.

While studying, he dedicated himself to intensive sound research in the recording studio. His first impulse consisted in avoiding rhythm and melody and focusing instead on the phenomenon of sound colour.

for people who say Köner is "too quiet": turn it up, and get some listening equipment that can handle those low frequencies. Köner can be some of the most intensely loud and earth-shattering music there is.

it's tropical and humid and sunny outside, but listening to mr. köner's music still makes me feel that i'm stranded on a huge glacier in the middle of the arctic. wooonderful stuff, the trio of nunatak / teimo / permafrost is fantastic.

elcruusto - try discogs (http://www.discogs.com/artist/Thomas+K%C3%B6ner), you can find almost every possible TK record there... good luck finding Aubrite in decent price though, it's one of the rarest TK albums.

I can't get hold of Aubrite or Kaamos anywhere, nowhere sells them anymore. What do you do in this situation? Is the album just lost indefinitely?

Honestly all of his work is great. I like La Barca (vivid imagery), Daikan and Kaamos (both for atmosphere) the most, but none of his albums are bad to begin with.

not much love for Aubrite... at least TK loves it himself - both times I saw him live he heavily used samples from this album :)

Permaforst, Daikan, Teimo, and Kaamos are my faves. Tabula Smaragdina is probably one of his best.

Get Daikan, Kaamos and Nuuk also! Tabula Smaragdina from Kaamos is one of Köner's best tracks.

Yes night time, really dark atmospheric stuff that's more meant to be background music. Horrible state of mind I was in last night and this was all I could listen to, certainly not positive music but quite the experience in darkness if your in the mood for it.

I can't really get into him that much because his work is almost too quiet. Maybe I should listen through headphones though...

All of his stuff is good. Stop comparing, they're each separate entities and each have their own highlights.
