ThisGirl – Don't Be a Kite
Biography
thisGIRL were a blues/swing-influenced hard-rock band from Rotherham, near Sheffield,UK. They were: Liam Creamer - vocals, Chris Shepherd - Guitar, Matt Westley - Bass, Ryan Jenkins - Drums. Their music often confounded critics as it was very difficult to pigeon-hole. thisGIRL were originally called Gerl, but this was changed after they realised this name was already in use.
They formed after meeting at a Skunk Anansie gig shortly into the new millenium. Their first track to be released was an appearance on the Lockjaw records compilation ‘Helping you back to work volume 6’. Their first single was withdrawn before release due to a shift in the record label. Their musical style quickly developed a highly original sound, which they termed ‘posiparent-core’, defying the standard terms of their genre at the time. At the average age of 19 they released debut album ‘Short Strut To The Brassy Front’ in April 2002, the tracks of which they rarely played live since.
This was followed up with two EPs, ‘Demos for the family’, released september 2003, and ‘thisGIRL…has fangs too’, released october 2003.
The debut full length album was finally followed in mid-2004, in the form of ‘UNO’, which received generally positive reviews, (though mixed reviews from the fans). However, many were quick to point out that perhaps TOO many musical styles were covered in these 12 tracks, from Led Zeppelin/RATM riffage to bitter blues to quirky asian-influenced ballad ‘Inshallah’.
