Theatre of Tragedy is a gothic metal/death doom metal/industrial rock/futurepop band, originally assembled in 1993 in Stavanger, Norway by Hein Frode Hansen, Raymond István Rohonyi and Lorentz Aspen, together with Tommy Lindal, Pål Bjastad, and Liv Kristine.
Their earlier albums have provided a great deal of influence to the gothic metal genre. The band was one of the first ones who made use of contrasting vocals - male bass vocals and death growls and female soprano singing.
On their first three albums (Theatre of Tragedy, Velvet Darkness They Fear, Aégis) Theatre of Tragedy presented lyrics written predominantly in a form of Olde English, an early form of the language prior to Shakespearean times.
Starting from the album Musique, however, the band made drastic changes to their style, which became significantly inspired by electro-rock and electro-pop, abandoning Early Modern English lyrics writing, heavier guitar riffing and death growls in the process. This style change was consequently continued on the following album, Assembly.
After a long break and after changing the female vocalist due to musical differences, and furthermore their management and the record label, Theatre of Tragedy released their new album Storm, the first one with their new singer, Nell Sigland (from The Crest).
On this album, the electronic influences are reduced again in favour of simplicity and naturalism. According to Hein Frode Hansen, Storm is to be seen as the missing link between Aégis and Musique.

I wouldn't like Liv to come back to ToT now: she's found her place in LE like Nell has found hers in ToT. Nell's contribution to the new album was huge, and now that Raymond has apparently run out of ideas she's the only one who can keep the band alive (provided that they won't split up after the promotion of FITW is over: I got this bad sensation about them from some interviews, as well as from the cover and concept of the album). Anyway, I'd REALLY like Nell to record something with The Crest too, it's a pity she's forgotten about them.

Wow I'm totally in awe over Storm, especially the first 3 tracks are so damn beautiful. Probably the first two, Storm and Silence, might be my favorite tracks of all time. Nell is a hundred times better than Liv, I'm sorry but her voice is so soft, angelic, strong at some points, and more real sounding than Liv's (njord is great but you know Liv doesn't really sound like that at all). I used to think this band was generic, but damn I was so wrong. Anyway this is just all my "opinion" :)
