Stavanger, Norway (1993 – 2010)

Theatre of Tragedy was a /// band, originally assembled in 1993 in Stavanger, Norway by Hein Frode Hansen, Raymond István Rohonyi and Lorentz Aspen, together with Tommy Lindal, Pål Bjastad, and Liv Kristine.

Their earlier albums have provided a great deal of influence to the genre. The band was one of the first ones who made use of contrasting vocals - male bass vocals and death growls and female soprano singing.

On their first three albums (Theatre of Tragedy, Velvet Darkness They Fear, Aégis) Theatre of Tragedy presented lyrics written predominantly in Early Modern English, a precedent to modern English used in and around Shakespearean times.

Starting from the album Musique, however, the band made drastic changes to their style, which became significantly inspired by and , abandoning Early Modern English lyrics writing, heavier guitar riffing and death growls in the process. This style change was consequently continued on the following album, Assembly.

After a long break and after changing the female vocalist due to musical differences, and furthermore their management and the record label, Theatre of Tragedy released their new album Storm, the first one with their new singer, Nell Sigland (from The Crest).
On this album, the electronic influences are reduced again in favour of simplicity and naturalism. According to Hein Frode Hansen, Storm is to be seen as the missing link between Aégis and Musique.

Musicians are allowed to experiment. So, I believe all their albums were great: pre or post-Assembly. One should not judge an artist by a single part of his/hers work. They were great as a band, from day one to the end.

Fans of old Theatre Of Tragedy, I really recommend you this song, from the french atmospheric doom metal band Angellore. You will probably like it... Please, give it a try! Angellore - I Am The Agony. We would love to get your opinion over it. Thanks a lot for your attention...

There are a few of us who have realised their greatness. If you take into account the amount of posts we make I think at least 50% of the shouts here are from pro-Assembly&Musique people. ^_^

yea i know you guys only like the gothic metal theatre of tragedy cause that is how they started out and ended it is just that the industrial records are more entertaining to me anyways i guess it is just a person that like electro/industrial music

Mh. That would be an explaination for the rare phenomenon. And of course would demystify and bring it back to being an old, boring "Raymond only should growl, I don't like him doing clean vocals". ._.

The level of indecipherability is truly groundbreaking, I am in awe

v Well, you know. Usually it's either "I only love their first doomy&gloomy albums olde english ftw the electroshit sucks" or "Theatre of Tragedy died when LK got a kick in her butt boo-hoo bringherbackyoumeanie!!!!1!!1!eleven!". Someone who only likes their industrial phase is quite rare, isn't it?
