"Seen through the eyes of a lonely and cynical person who is the only one among his friends who hasn't got somebody to love." - I definitely interpreted it that way, too. It's remarkable how a song so seemingly cheery has such a HEAVY undertone to it. Proven by the line(s): And when I feel bad
When people disappoint me
That's when I need you two
To help me believe
I wonder if any of the couples listed are still together... I read somewhere that they were all broken-up when the song was written. Pretty sinister undertone to a cheery song... which is what makes it special.
I never even thought of it like that. I've always taken it at face level, like he's just really excited about his friends getting together. I mean, if the song is from the singer's perspective it makes sense. I doubt he would be very lonely.
