  • 50 Questions about my top 50 (3 months later)

    7 Oct 2009, 19:38 by sambobgeldof

Well it was interesting going through this again, only about 4 of the bands have stayed in the same chart position. That said, there haven't been many new additions to the top 50. But The Young Knives, Cursive, Peter Doherty, Radiohead and The Fratellis have all dropped out so there are five newbies in there.

Going to do this again in 3 months to see how much my tastes have changed. Will see you in January.

    1. How did you get into 29? Atreyu
My friend Natalie from GCSE college sent me a song she had heard that she thought I would like, the song was PlayBleeding Mascara and the band was Atreyu. I did like it, and here we are.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? Green Day
I'm gonna hazard a guess that it was Basket Case but to be honest I can't be sure.

    3. What’s your favourite lyric by 33? We Are Scientists
"Well my tongue is tired and I'm seeing stars
I got a million ugly words for what you are
I gotta busted back and a broken heart
I guess everything is better wherever you are

    It's all outta context
    There's nothing I'm into
    Call it a complex
    It's really quite simple
    I'm tired of these hang-ups
I wish someone would call me back
    How 'bout it?"
    from PlayCallbacks

    4. What is your favourite album by 46? William Control
I will go for Hate Culture as it is currently his only solo release.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? The Early November
I own twoThe Acoustic EP and The Mother, The Mechanic, And The Path.

    6. What is your favourite song by 50? System of a Down
    Radio & Video

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? Babyshambles
None that I can think of actually.

    8. What is your favourite album by 15? My Chemical Romance
I'd say Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge though I do really like The Black Parade too.

    9. What is your favourite song by 4? Dashboard Confessional
Stolen or PlayStandard Lines, I'd go with the former.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? Hope of the States
    PlayEnemies/Friends

    11. What is your favourite album by 40? The Airborne Toxic Event
    The Airborne Toxic Event

    12. What is your favourite song by 10? Muse
I'm gonna go for New Born

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? Arctic Monkeys
Me, Matt and Ringo back when we were a band rocking out to Fake Tales of San Francisco and I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor in Stayfree.

    14. What is your favourite song by 38? UnderØath
Tricky... but I'd probably say PlayA Moment Suspended in Time

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? blink-182
    First Date

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live? Good Charlotte
None but I'd like to amend that one day.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? Panic at the Disco
PlayI Constantly Thank God for Esteban

    18. What is your favourite album by 11? Linkin Park
Hybrid Theory, but that's a really tricky choice. They are all great, including Reanimation

    19. Who is your favourite member of 1? Bright Eyes
It has to be Conor Oberst but Mike Mogis definitely deserves a mention, because it just wouldn't be Bright Eyes without him.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live? The Long Blondes
Yes, twice at Birmingham Academy II but won't again since they split. Will see any of their individual projects if they come nearby though!

    21. What is a good memory involving 27? Angels & Airwaves
Going to see them at Birmingham Carling Academy when it was on Dale End. Really really good gig, got crushed though!

    22. What is your favourite song by 16? Damien Rice
    I Remember

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 49? Ash
I think it was probably Burn Baby Burn or Shining Light.

    Indestructible

    25. What is your favourite song by 21? Emmy the Great
PlayEdward Is Dedward or PlayThe Easter Parade

    26. What is the song you don't like by 26? Emery
There aren't really any that i particularly dislike.

    27. What is your favourite album by 3? The Rural Alberta Advantage
I'll go for their debut, and so far only, album Hometowns as from that alone I have amassed well over 1000 plays in the last couple of months.

    28. What is your favourite song by 2? Brand New
Another tricky choice, and changes quite regularly, at the moment it is PlaySink but will likely revert to Seventy Times 7 or Soco Amaretto Lime when the infatuation with Daisy dies down a bit.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? The Killers
    PlayMr Brightside

    30. What is your favourite song by 8? Placebo
    PlaySpecial Needs

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? 3OH!3
None, would have been going next month if Meg wasn't silly!

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? The Good Life
    Album of the Year

    33. What is you favourite album by 12? Fall Out Boy
From Under The Cork Tree just nudges it over Folie à Deux

PlayI've Got Ten Friends and a Crowbar That Says You Ain't Gonna Do Jack.

    35. What is your favourite album by 34? Amateur Transplants
    Fitness To Practice

    36. What do you not like by 48? Avenged Sevenfold
I don't like some of their earlier metal music, but I fear that City of Evil is going to be the best album they ever make.

Zero, otherwise Hayley Williams and I would be wed by now ☺

As comprehensive a list as I can remember of artists I have seen between 2002 and the present. It's pretty pointless and only really means something to me.

  • An Introduction to The Artist Rock Leagues

    26 Jun 2009, 17:35 by HumanRejection

    Introduction

The large amount of rock and artists leagues, that range from the UK to Poland, the US to Japan, are the new way for Last.fm users to really say who are the best artists from a particular country. Perfect for our large community of music stat-heads, they are based on football (soccer) leagues but have taken their own life with great success, constantly improving and exponentially growing in numbers. Ultimately they give you, the humble Last.fm user, and the chance to say "my favourite band is best!", so come and join in!

    The Leagues

There are many different leagues in the FIRA ring and is growing with strong numbers of member’s aswell.

These leagues are often in the same set of rules than each other but the leagues work a little differently. So always read the rules before starting your votes, but the main thing is to have fun and vote for the artists you believe in the most.

    The Italian League

The Italian League is run by myself and has just started in this ring. So, I would be greatly thankful for any user to join me and the others in the Italian leagues. Now, I need users to pick there favourite 10 artists in the Qualify thread. This means whatever artists that come in the top 20 of the voters vote will go into the Serie A for the first season and the other top 22 will go to Serie B. So have you got a favourite in mind and want them to be in the Rock and Metal artist leagues? Hop on down, join and play! You won’t regret it.

    The British League

The British League is ran by the intellectually enhanced British resident Gilaventi. He has been running the British League for over a year now and have completed a very successful two seasons. They have just successfully entered the third season of the British artists league, so travel down there and join up!

    German Leagues

The fantastical tYhJyYsRuLeS is the creator and leader of the German League and also creating the artist league game itself! The German league has been going since April 2008 and has completed two seasons. So, like German rock artists or know a lot of them? Get down there!

    The Spanish League

A new league to the ring. Post your favourite bands in the Vote Thread.

For a full list of leagues please go to this thread for an updated list.

  • Singles night!

    7 Apr 2009, 12:27 by Kaitju

That's right, it's going to be a singles update only.

Let's start with the promised Doves rant. Like so many times before, the first single is track no.2 from the upcoming album. And like so many times before, it's a good one but maybe not the best one. Anyways, PlayKingdom Of Rust reminds me of a lot of the song The Last Broadcast. It must be the beat. Definitely looking forward to the new album.

Keane managed to disappear pretty well by the time they got to single no.3 of Perfect Symmetry titled PlayPerfect Symmetry. No wonder, it's a bit dull. They could've chosen better.

Another one in the series of "Yes, I've just found Wild Beasts" is the single "The Devil's Crayon". It's a great song and it presents another vocal talent in that band in addition to Hayden Thorpe. Recommended.

I had not been too impressed with Foals back when Cassius came out. It's post-punky jerkiness seemed a bit too masturbatory compared to, for example, The Futureheads or The Young Knives. But when Olympic Airways popped out I had to change my mind. That song had a delicate quality to it and a cool idea. So I bought it.

I found O Valencia! randomly and bought it away. It's an oldie but goldie.

Fleet Foxes released a 7" single off their Sun Giant EP titled Mykonos. I knew there was an alternate version to that song and I got the single in case it was included. It wasn't but who cares. The b-side is a brill cover of "False Knight on the Road".

Last but not least I have something I got months ago. Festival Thyme from ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. A pre-album EP release with alternate versions of album songs and a few "EP only" tracks. The 10" vinyl is a picture disc with some nice Conrad Keely art.
