Biography

“Sons are bred to consume so’s to rob them blind of their youth”.

Edward S Dodd and Owen Gaffney are song writers. Ed is a writer who splits his time between Nottingham and the States. He criss-crosses North America, travelling light, picking up itinerant work and stories, keeping journals. Owen writes electropop in Sweden. He learnt his craft at Confetti Studios in Nottingham, alongside Emma (Scout) Niblett. Owen has been writing with Ed on and off now for some years. ‘The first time I met Ed, I’d picked him up travelling south. Said he’d been waiting a couple of hours. It was raining.’ ‘Even to this day, we can laugh about exactly what was said, what we wore and what we smoked. Hitching, or picking up hitchers, makes you observant: you never know when you might have to recount it all in front of a judge.’ In 2006, they formed a new band, The War Crimes (named after a song by The Specials) following a conversation between Ed and Swedish songwriter Nicolai Dungar in a bar in Madison, Wisconsin. The War Crimes have performed six times in public. Seven if you include court appearances (‘lewd’ behaviour). They have released two singles, “Russian Dolls” and “Treatise”. Formally known as Pennyeach they released a single ‘Gracie b’ on the Shifty Disco label back in 1999 described as ‘resolutely uncommercial, wilfully perverse and quite perfect’ by The Times newspaper.
