Noth the original cut. The original was slower tempo, although most radio stations played at a slightly faster pace (46-47 rpm) to get the entire song on in less time. I believe most DJs were sick of it back then.
I first heard this music in 1961 when I lived in Memphis and it is just as pretty now as it was then. It was first recorded in 1961 in South Africa by a group of black gentlemen known as The Evening Songbirds (I believe). It was around even earlier in the 1920's with a different title. Beautiful music.
The guys from Disny really know their art. They got this music, kept all the soul of it, included some real african chorus and took it to another level. Even so, the original is fabulous. Thanks Lion King for bringing it back to us.
