The Supernaturals

Glasgow, United Kingdom

The Supernaturals were a five-piece guitar-based pop band from Glasgow, Scotland. Fronted by singer-songwriter James McColl, they signed to Parlophone in 1996 and had a string of singles which were pulled from their three albums and four EPs. Other members include Derek McManus and Ken McAlpine. They had a few tunes included in TV advertisements (Smile and I Wasn’t Built To Get Up), but the group were dismissed by the media as unfashionable and never really broke into the mainstream. In total they scored 5 UK Top 40 singles.

The band’s sound was similar to many 1960s rock bands, with elements of 1990s synth culture, especially later on. Two guitars are used, often one acoustic and one electric, and a variety of effects. Drums are for the most part subdued.

The band’s lyrics are self-ridiculing, witty, and often amusingly-clever. Songs are often related to other songs on the same album by a common theme.

The creative output was extensive (some 100 songs in 5 years), as was the touring, where they entertained large crowds at summer festivals and supporting other artists including Robbie Williams, usually via costume and comedy.

There is now a Supernaturals MySpace page where you can listen to their songs!

If anyone ever wants to trade old b-sides, early tracks, etc., I have a random assortment of about 20-30 but I'm missing equally as many that I'd love to get. Send me a PM if you're interested.

To answer my own question, yes, they could be. New album '360', out now. It's nice to know that after all these years they still know how to create an album full of catchy tunes.

Since the turn of the year, I've noticed there has been a lot of activity with loads of Supernaturals tracks being uploaded to youtube, old singles, demos etc. Then I noticed an official page of the band pop up on facebook, run the by band members themselves. It's almost as if they're gearing up for something.........they couldn't be, could they??? P.S. I don't think I'll ever tire of 'It Doesn't Matter Anymore'. One of the wrongly forgotten albums of the 90s.

I recently connected my MiniDisc player back to my hifi - not having used it for years' - and rediscovered a lot of music I hadn't listened to for ages. The Supernaturals 'It Doesn't Matter Anymore' was one, and I was amazed at just how good it sounded after all this time. Every song is quality, and I swear that the sun appeared in the sky as the album played. And this was at 10pm! If you don't own this 90's gem, purchase immediately!

They were ace! Saw them something daft like 18 times in 2 years. Everytime was a blast, except the last one after Ken had gone. Just wasn't the same. If anyone has "Dylan's day off" I'd love to hear it again

Saw them on the somewhat desperate rolling rock tour back when I was in school.

What a wonderful band the Supernaturals were. They weren't the most important Britpop band but they really summed up what made that era in pop music so fun.
